Classes for YouthYoung writers have myriad opportunities to launch, explore, consume and create great writing at Hugo House. From our Hugo Classes for Kids after-school workshops to the Scribes summer creative writing camps to our brand-new Saturday Classes for Teens, Hugo House offers conservatory-model instruction and an innovative creative writing space for all. All classes and workshops take place at Hugo House, unless otherwise noted. Scribes summer creative writing camp is an intensive two-week writing program facilitated by professional writers who will help you bring out the best in your work. You'll acquire a tool kit of literary forms, pick up exercises and techniques to develop your writer's voice, get serious and helpful feedback from your instructors and peers and tour the city to view new and familiar places with a writer's eye. The first session is for 7th and 8th graders only; the second session is for 9th–12th graders. Writers: 7th and 8th graders Date/time: July 21–August 1, 2008 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuition: $600 (scholarships available) To apply, click here. Hugo Classes for Kids are 10-week after-school workshops at Hugo House in the fall, winter and spring. Every Wednesday you will meet with a professional writer and volunteer mentors to read and write around a theme. Every session ends with a published anthology and a community reading in the Hugo House Theater. Registration for fall 2008 will begin in August. Class themes for 2008-09 will be posted in late summer. Writers (in two concurrent groups): 5th & 6th grade / 7th & 8th grade Date/time: Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuition: $50 (scholarships available) Registration (please check back in August 2008) Hugo Classes for Teens are Saturday workshops for writers who want to delve into particular subject areas such as screenwriting, playwriting, the short story, the novel, free-form poetry, zines, spoken word, reviewing, flash fiction and creative nonfiction, to name just a few. Workshops are anywhere from two to eight weeks in duration, depending on the course. Please check back in late summer for course listings and registration information. Writers: teens Date/Time: Saturday afternoons Tuition: $25-100 depending on the session, with full and partial scholarships available Registration (please check back in August 2008) Hugo House Mentoring is a program for serious writers between the ages of 15 and 18. With a specific project or idea in mind, you will be paired with a professional and practicing writer who will guide and advise your work. You will meet with your mentor at Hugo House one hour every week, at a time that is convenient for you both, for a period of 10 weeks (or three months). Mentors and mentees also have the opportunity to read in the Hugo House Cabaret several times during the year. This program is by application only.
