Residencies

Hugo House Residencies

In many ways, the writers-in-residence are the lifeblood of Hugo House. They bring us their wisdom, their inspiration, their talent and their hard work. Each year, five writers-in-residence are given financial support and charged with creating exciting new work and facilitating a range of teaching and mentoring services. They hold office hours (free of charge) for five hours each week for anyone seeking advice on writing; and they also lead writing classes that reach into the heart of Seattle's urban communities, with a specific focus on underserved populations including the homeless, low-income people, teenagers and youth. The writers-in-residence mentor people at all stages of the writing process, through personal interaction and imaginative public events that trigger an impulse to write.

The writers-in-residence are outstanding literary artists who are working on creative projects at the same time they are serving the community. The residencies at Hugo House afford them the time and financial support necessary to give birth to exciting new visions and projects. We offer three different writers in residency programs:

Hugo House writers-in-residence

Hugo Huts—our Belltown residencies

Hugo youth writer-in-residence

We also include two two-year theater residencies for local companies. Our purpose in offering these residencies is to help build strong, viable theater companies committed to presenting innovative new work that is interesting, thought-provoking and contributes to the civic discourse of our community. Our hope for the theater companies that receive residencies is that they will use their time at Hugo House to develop and implement plans for future sustainability.
